Don't you hate it when you really look forward to something, but it just doesn't come up to expectation?
I am a big fan of Waitrose. Every so often when I am feeling flush, I will go and do my weekly shop there and buy all those indulgent things that I love. Nice cheese, olives, dips . . . and of course, chocolate. I also like chocolate ginger, so threw this straight into my basket when I saw it.
These bars seem to be modelled somewhat on the Thorntons brand, with similar offerings - ginger, praline etc. This one specifically is a dark chocolate shell, filled with a ginger milk chocolate truffle and comes in two bits, A La Bounty style.
And yes - your eyes do not deceive. More bloom than the Chelsea Flower Show. Not a good start, but hey, the weather has been hot. (Hmmmm . . . .)
And it was downhill from there. The "plain" chocolate (their words in the ingredients list, not mine) is a measly 31% cocoa solids. I've had milk chocolates with more than this. I found it tasteless and insipid. The truffle inside was a little better with a nice ginger kick, and little bits of fresh tasting ginger, but the truffle was too dense and again, didn't really have that cocoa hit.
A little disappointing - I was expecting more from Waitrose. Let's hope the praline version I bought at the same time isn't quite so lackadaisical . . .
HOW NAUGHTY IS IT?

I just had a Ghirardelli dark chocolate & mint bar I bought in the States last week. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as the Green & Black's version.
how is the above comment related to this review at all Lol how random?Am i missing something :S
I find it so disappointing when I open a bar and its 'bloomed' ... just makes it look that bit less appertising dosent it! Cant say I have seen this or the praline version in my Waitrose :S I will have to have another look tommorow :) any excuse for a bit of Waitrose shopping eh!
Jim: Um...I think I wrote that comment with the first sentence of the post in mind...Normally love Ghirardelli anything but this one was disappointing.
Make sense?
Bloomed chocolate is very annoying, I agree. It's due to poor storage conditions, for which there is rarely any decent excuse
Ok at the risk of making myself sound extremely stupid is this not a Waitrose own brand bar?? Im assuming Ghirardelli is some sort of brand!? :S im confused
Hi Jim - yes this is a Waitrose own brand.
Wandering Coyote was just sympathising with me on being disappointed in something that you have been looking forward to - in Coyote's case, the Ghirardelli chocolate.
Amanda: thanks for taking a stab at explaining...
I just finished a Ghirardelli 60% cocoa bar and it was really good, though I do prefer the flavour of the Green & Black's dark a bit more.
Ghirardelli is a higher-end American brand from San Fransico. I love their hot cocoa mixes. I just did a brief shopping trip to the States, where it's way cheaper to buy this brand, and I managed to score some baking chocolate put out by Ghirardelli, too, so I'm looking forward to seeing what that's like.
BTW, I've been enjoying your blog posts so much I've added a link here on my food site. Keep up the good work!
